Maritime Misconceptions

Understanding the Maritime Market

Shipping is one of the world’s most essential industries, yet maritime investing is unfamiliar to many investors. At its core, maritime is a real asset business driven by simple economic fundamentals: global trade requires ships, and the relationship between vessel supply and cargo demand determines returns.

Despite perceptions of risk and complexity, maritime is supported by tangible assets, resilient demand, and compelling supply dynamics. At Easterly Clear Ocean (ECO), we believe experience, operational expertise, and deep industry relationships are critical to navigating the asset class and identifying opportunities.

Shipping is too volatile

Freight rates can move quickly, reinforcing the perception that shipping is driven by short-term volatility.

Reality:

Daily freight rates reflect current market conditions, but maritime cycles typically unfold over multiple years and are shaped by vessel supply and global trade flows.

The ECO Approach:

ECO focuses on structural supply-demand imbalances and stress-tests vessel economics, including day rates, breakevens, leverage and liquidity, seeking flexibility to hold through weaker markets.

Shipping is overbuilt

Shipping has historically experienced periods of excess vessel supply, leading to concerns that newbuilds will overwhelm demand.

Reality:

Today, constrained shipyard capacity, an aging global fleet and increasingly stringent environmental requirements are limiting supply growth across select maritime sectors.

The ECO Approach:

ECO targets sectors where limited fleet growth and durable demand create attractive supply-demand dynamics, seeking opportunities where constrained supply can support charter rates and asset values.

Geopolitical and macroeconomic shocks undermine shipping

As the backbone of global trade, shipping is exposed to geopolitical and economic disruption.

Reality:

Disruptions can pressure trade, but they can also alter trade routes and increase voyage distances, tightening effective vessel supply and supporting utilization.

The ECO Approach:

ECO diversifies across vessel types, trade routes and counterparties and actively manages regional exposure. Its operating relationships and global market access provide visibility into evolving risks and opportunities.

Ships rapidly lose value

Some investors view vessels as depreciating assets with little value beyond the income they generate.

Reality:

Vessels are tangible assets with resale and residual value. In tighter markets, vessel values can also appreciate as operators compete for available tonnage.

The ECO Approach:

ECO evaluates vessel age, efficiency, regulatory requirements and residual value, seeking assets positioned to generate income and remain competitive through their investment horizon.

A maritime accident could create significant liability

Owning physical assets can raise concerns about the financial and environmental risks of maritime accidents.

Reality:

Maritime involves operational and environmental risks, but established regulatory, safety and insurance frameworks help manage these exposures.

The ECO Approach:

ECO emphasizes vessel quality, experienced technical management, regulatory compliance and appropriate insurance coverage to help manage operational risk.

Glossary

Freight markets: The market for transporting commodities, energy and goods by vessel, with rates determined by vessel supply and cargo demand.

Day rate: The daily amount earned by a vessel for its employment or charter.

Breakeven: The level of vessel earnings required to cover operating and other applicable costs.

Newbuild: A newly constructed vessel ordered from a shipyard, typically delivered several years after the order is placed.
